Registration and selection of new students



Master`s:

Registrations into the PPGF/UFRN occur twice a year, announced on the official site of the Program, through specific decrees. Selection will be based on the undergraduate school record and a knowledge examination. The applicant’s resume and letters of recommendation will also be considered.


Doctorate:

Registrations for the Doctoral Program can be made at any time of the year, according to the Permanent Decree. Selection will be based on the student’s records in the Masters Program and on a doctoral plan of study jointly elaborated by the candidate and one of the program advisors. The applicant’s resume and letters of recommendation will also be considered.

Doctoral candidates who have not earned a Master`s Degree in Physics must pass a written examination, which is part of the selection process of the PPGF/UFRN Master`s Program.


Máster`s Degree Requirements


Be enrolled in the course for a minimum of 1 (one) year and maximum of 3 (three) years. Under exceptional circumstances and at the discretion of the Collegiate of the Postgraduate Program (see Internal Regulations) this time period may be extended for six months.

Achieve at least 20 (twenty) credits in regular courses, of which 16 (sixteen) are required, and obtain a total achievement coefficient (AC) greater than or equal to B.

Obtain a passing grade (6.0) in the English proficiency examination.

Obtain a passing grade (6.0) in the Master’s Qualification Examination.

Defend a Master’s Dissertation and have it approved.


Doctoral Degree Requirements

Be enrolled in the course for a minimum of 2 (two) years and a maximum of 5 (five) years. Under exceptional circumstances and at the discretion of the Collegiate of the Postgraduate Program (see Internal Regulations), this time period may be extended for one year.

Achieve at least 40 credits in regular courses, 20 of which are required, and obtain a total achievement coefficient (AC) greater than or equal to B.

Obtain a passing grade (6.0) in the foreign language proficiency examination. English is required and the student has a choice between Spanish, French and German for the second language.

Obtain a passing grade (6.0) in the General Doctoral Examination.

Obtain a passing grade (6.0) in the Pretest Qualification Examination.

At the time of thesis defense, have at least one scientific paper on the topic published or accepted for publication in a Qualis Alpha periodical, or a patent registered with INPI.

Defend a Doctoral Thesis and have it approved.
